A group of Canadians concerned for the safety and well being of the rendered Canadian Mr. Bashir Makthal came together to wage a campaign codenamed Friends and Family of the Bashir Makhtal Campaign (FROBMAC). The main aim of the FROBMAC campaign is to lobby the Canadian government and its affiliated security branches to move heaven and earth for the release of the rendered Canadian.

It is the inherent believe of the FROBMAC members that Kenya had no business rendering a Canadian to a third country albeit one under martial law and occupied by Ethiopia. It is also the expectation of the FROBMAC members that the Canadian government would do more than it has done so far to pressure Ethiopia for the release of the rendered Canadian Mr. Bashir Makhtal.

FROBMAC members believe in justice, equality, and due process none of which was accorded to our fellow Canadian either by Kenya which detained him or by Ethiopia which is now illegally holding him against his will and incommunicado. FROBMAC members also believe that what happened to Mr. Makhtal can happen to any Canadian traveling abroad. It is our hope that the Canadian government will do more to protect Canadians traveling abroad.
