URGENT ACTION

Human rights group issues new appeal over detained former Toronto resident
April 18, 2007

Amnesty International has sent out another urgent appeal over the incommunicado detention and possible torture and ill treatment of Bashir Makhtal, a Canadian citizen and former Toronto resident who was deported from Kenya to Somalia and Ethiopia without being charged in January.

Makhtal's name topped the list of nine foreign nationals who are being held in detention in at least three locations in Ethiopia. Amnesty International said in its appeal it believes up to 75 other men, women and children of various nationalities have been detained there.

The human rights organization is asking people to write, email or fax Ethiopia's prime minister, foreign affairs minister or justice minister.
